Car of the Year: Winner

Share

Yes, this is the big one. The best car of the year. This must excel in everything. It should be able to satisfy the little child in you, while taking you shopping and your children to school safely and comfortably. Price shouldn’t be too high either.

Based on all these things, we have picked the overall winner for our 2009 Car of the Year. And the best car in 2009 was:

Vauxhall/Opel Astra

The Astra has adopted a new, quite radical style for its last two generations, a theme present on the new one as well. It looks very good, it is cheap, it will be reliable but it promises to be exciting as well, a thing which Vauxhall/Opel tried with their new cars like the Insignia. All we have to do now is wait for the mad VXR/OPC version which might get, unlike the old one, four-wheel drive.

Runner-up: Volkswagen Golf

Even though the VW Golf is better built than the Astra, we’ve placed it in our runner-up spot. Why? Well, the Mk. 6 is just a bit too dull and unchanged from the old ones. VW prefers to tweak the Golf, not change it. Even though that is a recipe for success, its “old-fashioned” style and overall feel lets it down a bit.

So, there we are, our 2009 awards are done. We hope you’ve enjoyed them as much as we did doing them. Drop a comment below and let us know what you think about them but in the meantime, here is a short link recap of our prizes:
