EPA and DOT propose new fuel economy labels

The EPA and DOT are proposing a new fuel economy label, with two options proposed.

Both options are designed to better accommodate new vehicle types, such as EVs and plug-in hybrids, which aren’t well represented by the current labels. These vehicles will display a miles per gallon equivalent, or MPGe. Other new parts will include CO2 emissions, and an “Other Air Pollutants” grade, from 1 (Worst) to 10 (Best).

One of the proposed designs, pictured above, will use a letter grading system, ranging from A+ to D.

A new label is definitely on its way, but it is unknown what the final result will be. However, the public can submit comments on the labels here.
