Forbidden Fruit: 5 cars we absolutely need in North America

Europe, I hope you’re listening!

After writing about the need for more diesel cars in North America yesterday, that got me thinking: what are some other cars we miss out on, that we really ought to have a crack at? So I decided to put together a list of five cars that automakers should really send over to us.

Volkswagen Scirocco

The Scirocco is essentially a Golf underneath, arguably one of the best hatchbacks money can buy. This is better-looking however, albeit a bit less practical. But VW could always replace the three-door Golf with this and keep the five-door for practical people.

All of the Dacia’s

I know, we’ve all seen Top Gear turn Dacia into a bit of joke, but when you get down to it they’re great, honest-to-God cheap cars. For the price they command, you couldn’t ask for much more.

Ford Falcon

Mainstream, rear-wheel-drive sedans are non-existent these days. Unless, of course, you live in Australia, where they make this bad boy. Available in everything from Average Joe trim to the sublime, high-performance versions from Ford Performance Vehicles. They even make a ute. In other words, a practical and yet very fun-to-drive car for an affordable price. What’s not to like?

Opel Insignia OPC

When we were promised this car by General Motors in the form of the Buick Regal GS, what we really got was a watered-down version. The Opel has all-wheel-drive and 321 bhp, while the Buick sends just 255 horsepower to the front wheels. Come on GM, grow some cojones and give us the real thing. And while you’re at it, we wouldn’t mind a wagon either!

Citroen DS3 Racing

Well, okay, the DS3 Racing is meant to be limited-production. But I’m sure Citroen could make a few more units for us! It’s fun-to-drive and even feels at home on a racetrack, but you could still live with it on a day-to-day basis. We don’t really have any out-of-the-factory cars like this here at all, this could be Citroen’s opportunity to fill a niche before someone else does.
