Garmin recalls Nuvi portable GPS units due to fire risk

Garmin is recalling the Nuvi portable GPS units due to an issue with the batteries which can result in a fire.

The battery, provided by a third-party manufacturer, was poorly designed and can overheat, which in turn can create a fire. Less than 10 cases have been reported, with no significant damage or injuries.

Nuvi models 200W, 250W, and 260W, as well as some in the 700 Series, are affected, with 1.25 million units at risk. Some have been installed in cars as standard equipment, and Suzuki has already confirmed that some GPS units fitted to their cars are affected.

You can check if your unit is affected by going to www.garmin.com/nuvibatterypcbrecall. Garmin will fix affected units by replacing the battery and installing a spacer on top of the battery next to the print circuit board.
