These are the latest pictures of Subaru’s WRX coupe, which is being jointly developed with Toyota.
The “Toyobaru” collaboration was first previewed by Toyota, who showed the FT-86 concept at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. This test car however, with its ill-fitting and hacked-up Impreza bodywork, is Subaru’s version of the coupe.
While it’s Toyota sibling is expected to be rear-wheel drive, the Subaru will have a rear-wheel biased 4-wheel drive system. Power comes from a 2.0L, flat-four boxer engine producing around 200bhp, giving the coupe a 0-62mph time of under 7 seconds.
The boxer engine is notoriously thirsty, so Subaru have worked hard to make sure it meets increasingly tight emissions regulations. It should be capable of around 35 mpg.
Subaru engineers have also been working hard on improving the Legacy sourced chassis. Brakes, steering, springs and dampers have all be upgraded to ensure the car handles like a proper sports car.
The WRX Coupe is expected to cost around £22,ooo in the UK when it goes on sale late next year.
