Messing about with car configurators – Porsche edition

Porsche configurator

Porsche has an obsession with creating as many car variants and optional extras as possible. They’ve got 25 versions of the Porsche 911 alone, each offering what feels like the world’s longest options list. To find out what kind of bizarre, interesting, and expensive cars their obsession can create, I dove into their online configurator.

The world needs another Bugatti Veyron

BUG_Veyron_Photo_RGB

At $2 million, the Bugatti Veyron is a seriously expensive car with equally expensive maintenance – an oil change alone costs $21,000. The car’s not exactly a looker, either. But the Veyron is an exceptional kind of insane, and the world could use more of it.

The star of this year’s Canadian International Auto Show — the McLaren P1

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Canadian International Auto Show has seen its fair share of epic automobiles over the years. The Lamborghini Diablo SV still stands out as my fond first memory of the show, and I’ve returned every year since then to see the likes of the Aston Martin One-77, Bugatti Veyron and Porsche Carerra GT. However, this year something very special was on display — the McLaren P1.

Beautiful engineering — It’s closer than you think

Winter

Even in Toronto, one of the warmest parts of Canada, the winters are not particularly gentle. In the last month, we’ve had an ice storm leave people without power for up to 10 days, and a wind chill temperature as low as -44 degrees Celsius. When you’re faced with conditions like this, you need the right machine for the job — enter the Little Brute.

The joy of motoring — What motivates us to drive?

Suzuki Grand VitaraAs you might’ve guessed by the lack of recent content on this blog, I’ve been busy lately. Shortly after establishing BlackBerry Buff, I was invited to write for BlackBerry Empire: an opportunity I happily accepted. Various other life matters later intruded, and to make a long story short, it began to feel as if I’d become distant from the automotive world I loved so dearly. But a couple weeks ago, I had the chance to rekindle that special connection between man and machine.

The Nissan Juke meets its match with the new Jeep Cherokee

Jeep CherokeeIf you were never a fan of the Nissan Juke’s bizarre headlamp layout, with smaller headlamps placing themselves above a pair of properly-sized lights, I have some unfortunate news — Jeep has followed suit with the new Cherokee, and put bluntly, it’s not looking pretty.

The 2013 Canadian International Auto Show in a nutshell [VIDEO]

2013 Canadian International Auto ShowToday, I attended the 2013 Canadian International Auto Show here in Toronto. Unfortunately, there weren’t any world debuts nor any other news really worth mentioning to a global audience. However, a number of really cool cars were present, many of which were Canadian debuts. So, instead of boring you with the usual wall of text, I’ve decided to mix things up a bit. I took my BlackBerry Z10 along with me, and at the end of the day I took the material I had and put it into the Story Maker app to produce a video. So, if you want a quick summary of the day, have a look at the video after the jump!

Diesel continues to creep into North America with the Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel

Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo DieselThis year’s Chicago Auto Show kicked off yesterday, and although there were a number of interesting reveals, one car in particular caught my interest: the Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel. Yes folks, diesel is (fortunately) continuing to become more prominent here in North America, so let’s have a look at the latest oil-burner.

Brand loyalties: Where do yours lie?

Audi RS5 Cabriolet

Although it’s always best to consider all options when purchasing a product, let’s face it — most of us have preferences for certain brands in their respective industries. So my question for you today is this: where do your brand loyalties, if any, lie in the automotive industry?

Rear-wheel-drive versus front-wheel-drive — The age-old debate

Well, one RWD advantage comes to mind instantly!

Well, one RWD advantage comes to mind instantly!

These days, front-wheel-drive has become the drivetrain layout of choice for many manufacturers. Even BMW, famous in the past for criticizing the layout, has given into the temptation with the launch of the Concept Active Tourer. But many of us gearheads have pooh-poohed automakers for this, claiming that rear-wheel-drive is far superior. And in some ways, that’s certainly true. Let’s have a look at the facts so we can draw some conclusions.
