Reports suggest that the VW Phaeton may be returning to North America.
The car sold very poorly when it was last here from 2004 to 2006, with just 2,253 units shifted. And they have depreciated greatly since. The brand new price was $85,000, and now you can pick them up used for as little as $25,000. So it seems like a ridiculous idea to return.
However, Volkswagen aims to triple their share of the US market by 2018, and this may be a part of that. Moreover, the US-market car will reportedly differ from other markets, and it will coincide with the launch of a new, second-generation Phaeton. Perhaps they’re hoping that the new car will appeal more to the market. We’ll have to wait and see.
