The Jeep Grand Cherokee platform may be put to use for future Alfa Romeo and even Maserati SUVs.
According to Sergio Marchionne, Chrysler CEO, the Grand Cherokee “architecture has legs. It’s important for us to tap all of the hard work that has gone on inside Chrysler on the new Grand Cherokee. It has a level of solidity and resilience that we have underestimated.”
This latest platform is able to handle more powerful engines, which would make it the perfect candidate for the underpinnings of a Maserati SUV. While the idea sounds a bit crazy, it isn’t a first. Porsche’s done it with the Cayenne, and Aston Martin is planning an SUV to revive the Lagonda nameplate. Whether we like it or not though, a spokesman has confirmed that the project is underway. Power will likely come from a Ferrari-sourced engine.
Alfa Romeo could be receiving an SUV as well. Not much is known about it, but a spokesman has confirmed that it is a possibility.
The new models will be revealed in 12 to 18 months.
