2012 Volkswagen Beetle set to be unveiled in Shanghai, high-performance variant may follow

A report on Autoblog suggests that the next-gen VW Beetle will be unveiled at this year’s Shanghai Motor Show, with a possible high-performance variant to follow.

While we were already told that this new Beetle would be much sportier than before, the high-performance variant comes as a bit of a surprise. However, Volkswagen is trying to make the new car appeal more to males, and with that in mind this move makes plenty of sense.

This “Super Beetle” would use the phenomenal five-cylinder engine out of the Audi TT RS and RS3, developing 335 horsepower. Not much more is known about it, but insiders say that this Beetle will perform even better on a track than the Scirocco R.

If such is the case, then we’re definitely looking forward to Shanghai next month.
