WTCC: Mexico round canceled

The 2nd round of the World Touring Car Championship in Puebla, Mexico has been canceled.

The races were set to take place on April 11th, but the local authorities told series officials last week that the safety of visitors is not guaranteed because of security concerns in the area. It has not been decided whether to have a replacement event or just drop the schedule to 11 events.

“The FIA, in agreement with promoter KSO, has decided to cancel the second event in the 2010 FIA World Touring Car Championship scheduled to take place in Puebla, Mexico, on April 11th,” the statement said.

“The FIA’s decision is based on security reports from the region and follows close consultation and guidance from OMDAI, the Mexican National Sporting Authority.”

WTCC series promoter said, “No decision has yet been taken about the possibility to replace the Mexican event. We will think about it, evaluate the different opportunities and decide before the next meeting at Marrakech. I will decide in one month, but it could also be that we can stay with 11 events.”
