Colin Chapman’s family voices support for Lotus Renault GP, rejects Team Lotus

While the situation between F1 teams Lotus Renault GP and Team Lotus-Renault is yet to be sorted out, Colin Chapman’s family has endorsed the former team, ran by the Lotus automaker in partnership with Renault.

Team Lotus was granted rights to use the Lotus name for 2010 Formula 1 season, but for the 2011 season, they decided that they didn’t need permission, and pressed ahead despite the termination of their license. Then Lotus partnered with Renault to form Lotus Renault GP, creating confusion between the two Lotus teams. To make matters worse, Team Lotus will be using Renault engines, and both teams plan to use similar liveries.

Colin Chapman’s son, Clive Chapman, had this to say:

“The Chapman family is looking forward to continuing to give its support to Group Lotus, which is the ongoing Lotus entity created by Colin and Hazel Chapman. After all, the Lotus marque is the responsibility of Group Lotus.”

Despite what Chapman’s family may have in mind though, it’s likely going to take some heavy legal action to stop Team Lotus.
