Rumours suggest that the next-generation Shelby GT500 could pack over 600 horsepower under the hood.
A number as high as 620 horsepower may be achieved by boring out the current 5.4L V8 to 5.8 litres, and fitting a new supercharger. Car and Driver estimates that with that power, the GT500 will finish the quarter mile in just 12 seconds, and if there’s no electronic limiter like on the current model, it could reach an absurd top speed of 190 mph. However, the 0-60 time is not expected to improve, as the current model is limited by traction to 4.1 seconds.
The new GT500 is also expected to receive some visual touch-ups. This whole package will set you pack a relatively inexpensive $60,000. However, it isn’t expected to hit showroom floors until sometime in 2012.
