Norbert Reithofer, CEO of BMW, has confirmed a plug-in hybrid variant of the 5 Series, dubbed the New Energy Vehicle, for the Chinese market.

The New Energy Vehicle is set to be revealed at this year’s Shanghai Motor Show. Reithofer says this car will be “from China for China.” It will most likely not be coming to the US either. However, some of the technology may be used on the US-bound ActiveHybrid 5. No other details were revealed.

Considering the overlap between the Shanghai Motor Show and New York Auto Show, there is a chance that the production version of the ActiveHybrid 5 will be revealed in New York. We’ll find out when the shows kick off next month.
