Screw being green

Yeah I said it, being green as a fashion statement just shows how much of an idiot you are. Before I begin, I am down for the stopping of deforestation and the use of renewable energy, not to mention the need to increase efficiency, but…

…things started going down the crapper when all of a sudden being “green” was a fashion status, everyone that was something in the most fashionable districts of the big cities had to have at least one example of something “recyclable” or “environmentally friendly.”

This of course takes us to the Toyota Prius.

The Toyota Prius

Now to be brutally honest, the Prius is a very okay small car, it’s sort of the definition of average for a small car. However, when you add the smug factor it all comes crashing down.

“I drive it because it’s eco friendly.” Your old car was better because it was already, you know, built

“I bought it because it gets 51 MPG.” No it doesn’t. I bet you any money that you get 32 MPG maximum.

“I bought it because it stops climate change” If anything, it should make the problem worse.

Of course, there are the few ones that are honest and tell you they bought it because they wanted a car and a hybrid is what’s trendy now, but these are few and far between.

In yet another case of hating the fans rather that whatever they are fans of, the Prius has become a victim of its own success. So recycle, plant trees, unplug your cellphone charges (Why yes, they do still suck energy even if there’s nothing plugged on them), but buy an Insight or Fusion if you’re sold on a hybrid.

From this particular point of view, the Insight is a good choice. Otherwise, I’ve heard it’s rubbish. The Fusion’s gotten plenty of praise though.
