A successor for Audi’s R15 plus Le Mans prototype racer, dubbed the R18, is rumoured to be coming this Friday.
While some may be skeptical of the rumour, it comes straight from the Le Mans Live Blog, which is ran by Michelin. Michelin is one of Audi Sport’s major sponsors in their Le Mans effort, and so if a new LMS racer from Audi were due, they’d be sure to know.
The R18 is said to be a closed-cockpit racer, a concept Audi has not been known to support, up until Peugeot’s closed-cockpit 908 HDi FAP ended their winning streak at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2009. It will also have a shark fin engine cover, similar to modern F1 cars, to comply with new ACO regulations.
Not many more details are known beyond that, but if the rumour proves true, we’ll have full details for you tomorrow.
