Audi Working on New Supercar

The R8 V10 is Audi's current range topping supercar, but this could change

Reports are saying that Audi may be working on a new range-topping supercar, something even faster than the R8 V10.

The car would use the same platform as the upcoming replacement to the Lamborghini Murcielago, known as the Jota. Unlike the Jota though, which will be using a V12, the Audi will use a V10 developing around 600hp.

This platform is expected to be based on the platform of the R8, but heavily modified. The car will have plenty of carbon fibre bits to keep the weight down, and a dual-clutch transmission for very quick shifting.

The name used may be the R10. This would be fitting, as the R8 used the name of the old R8 race car, and with the R10 TDI now out of racing, or at least out of Audi’s team, this would follow that same naming pattern.

This R10 will be longer and wider than the R8. Since the underpinnings will be from the Murcielago replacement, expect something about as big as the Murcielago. The car will come with Audi’s quattro AWD system as standard.

It is said that prototypes are already going around the Nurburgring disguised as Lamborghinis, but the car won’t be released until at least 2012.

Volvo May be Reviving the R Performance Range

Pictured above is the Volvo C30 R-Design, and as the name suggests, it’s a product of Volvo’s R-Design division. Not that long ago though, R was a performance division of Volvo and not a design division. They produced some great cars, but in 2007, Volvo dropped the brand and replaced it with the R-Design division.

The problem was the image of Volvo. The average Volvo customer isn’t interested in a performance car, and if you’re in the market for a sports car, Volvo is among the last words to pop into your head. Not many people bought these brilliant cars, they were too underrated. Volvo sold less than a third of the R performance cars than they had hoped to sell.

When talking with Swedespeed, Volvo’s North American chief Doug Speck hinted at the revival of the R performance range. He said that rather than aiming at the top of the line tuners like AMG and the M-division, this range would aim at medium-level performers like Audi’s S range of cars.

This is good news, and just in time, as the upcoming Volvo S60 could really use a touch of performance. Hopefully they will decide to revive the range.

Heffner Performance runs twin-turbo R8 on dyno

As a teaser of their upcoming twin-turbo Audi R8, Heffner Performance has put the car on a dyno and put it on video along with the dyno results compared to the stock R8 results.

Now, it’s not quite a video, look closely and you’ll notice the wheels aren’t moving, so they probably just took an image and then recorded the sound. It’s worth watching because of that sound though, it sounds magnificent. I’m quite looking forward to this project. Just wish someone could pull off a twin-turbo R8 V10, but if Audi had problems with that, then I suspect everyone else will too.
