The New Fiat Doblo

Fiat Doblo

The latest edition of Fiat’s family bus was launched. And can I first say, although quite embarrassed, that it’s quite a handsome looking thing although not as good as the new Citroen C3 Picasso. But let’s get back to the facts.

When on sale it will be offered with four engines: a 94bhp petrol, and three diesels with 89bhp, 104bhp and 133bhp. It sounds ok for a car like this but 89bhp does sound a bit depressing. But these types of 7-seater cars never seem to be anything other than depressing. Well, I don’t think this is the case here, you see this is made by Italians. I’m not suggesting in any way that it’s passionate or any other thing that some Italian cars are but it’s not as bad as a Renault Espace for example.

Fiat Doblo

The interesting thing is that it will be offered with a dual fuel engine which will work on petrol or methane. There will also be a new diesel later with a paddle shift gearbox. No comment on the dual fuel engine, that sounds ok but a paddle shifter? On a 7-seat family car? Who is going to buy that?  Another good thing for the family oriented motorist is the start-stop system which will come as standard. And it’s ecological too with only 129g/km of CO2.

Unfortunately, Fiat hasn’t announced the prices yet.

Mercedes buys Brawn GP

Yes, it seems the rumours were true, Mercedes-Benz has indeed bought the double-championship winning Brawn team and it’s aiming to return to Formula 1 as a manufacturer since 1955. The German giant has bought about 75% of the English team and they say that Ross Brawn will remain team principal. They will also continue their deal with McLaren as they must supply engines for free for another 6 years to them.

Over the next two-year period McLaren will buy back actions worth 40% back from Mercedes. The new Mercedes-Benz GP team will be also based in the current Brawn GP factory in Brackley. The thing is, I just don’t understand what Mercedes is trying to play here. They will return to F1 by buying a team that has won a few weeks ago both world championships.

You might think: ok, that’s very intelligent then, they chose a winning team so it’s very good. You see, in F1, development takes time, so in general, the team which has the most time, experience and money turns up with the best car for the next year. Now Brawn have been fighting for the championship until the penultimate race so they kept their eyes focused on the 2009 car while others like Ferrari for instance had already began their development on their 2010 car.

The driver lineup will also be a problem. Rumours say that there will be an all-British layout at McLaren : Button and Hamilton, and an all-German layout at Mercedes: Heidfeld and Rosberg. Imagine that: the Germans will be laying the red carpet for each other in the ultimate fair-play team game begging each other to overtake while the Brits will be having a massive fight for who should be nr 1 .

Video Special – Slow Motion Motorsports

Well, as I haven’t done too much for the blog since I joined in a couple of weeks ago I tough I might be able to pull something off by stitching together some slow-mo videos of various motorsports. After 2 weeks and big technical difficulties, it’s ready. All of it is motorsports except for the Top Gear shots with the Exige, Mustang, Aston & Ferrari. I was inspired by another bloke called Mattzel who some of you might know, has his video featured on TG’s website.

Please note there may be some problems at first due to the fact that the video is still new and click that HQ button!

Schumacher’s F1 car on eBay

Yup, that’s right you can now buy a Formula 1 car on eBay. Specifically it’s the 1994 title-winning Benetton that Michael drove that season. But you get more for your money than just the car – the guy gives you a lot of extra things as well like several spare parts, including two extra sets of wheels and tires, and its data laptop, to monitor the fluid levels and temperatures. He also says it’s ready to race on the track with the same performance as back in ’94. As often the case with these things you can’t find out a specific amount of BHP but I reckon it’s somewhere north of 700. So expect a pretty big backache when you get out of it. It received 184 bids until know with the top one at a staggering 2.3 million quid. But that isn’t all. Only the transport will cost you 10.000 quid. Supposedly it’s going to arrive on a bed of roses with 3 naked lap-dancers in the truck. So, if some of you fancy a nice gift for your kid this Christmas you’re pretty well catered for.

Here’s the link for all the kid-loving fathers out there:   http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150386832229

Car of the Week – Toyota Celica

Well, in our effort to bring the blog to life again, me and Igor decided we should have a Car of the Week feature which will be done…you’ve guessed it – every week. Basically it’s a tribute to all the great cars that are out there or for the ones that aren’t anymore. It’s not going to be just presenting some facts and press conferences from the manufacturer praising the car either, we’re going to express our own opinion about the car. So I hope you will enjoy it and here goes our first Car of the Week: The Toyota Celica.

This Japanese coupe has been around for over 30 years but unfortunately since 2006 when the last Celica rolled of the production line, Toyota has decided they’ve entertained us too much throughout the years – so they stopped making it anymore. For me that was a sad moment because the Celica, especially the last gen model was a really, really good car. Of course, some of them had RWD and 4WD across the years so you might wonder why we’ve picked the last one as our Car of the Week. The front wheel drive model you might argue is no match for the other exciting ones. Well as it is often the case in the motor industry – every good car has its flaws.

Let’s include, shall we, a bit of the boring facts: It’s got a 1.8liter engine which has a million V’s in its name (take this one for instance VVTLi T Sport), it’s front wheel drive, it does 0-60 in 8.7 seconds and it has a top speed of 127 mph. With these rather dull figures you might be boggled how the Celica could be such a great car. It’s not a gadget fest either, traction control for instance is available only on the more powerful 188bhp engine. But it’s not facts that make up a great car. This simplicity, this “averageness” turns out brilliant on the road. Even with its FWD it drives brilliantly, it’s cheap and it looks spectacular. It’s also very reliable and you can get small children in the back seats as well. This is then for a coupe as practical as your average wardrobe.

But its the spirit of the thing that I just love. Now Japanese manufacturers are not particularly good at making cars with soul – but somehow the Celica in its old age with all it’s rallying prowess has achieved that. It’s simple, it’s cheap and it handles brilliantly. Add reliability and the looks to that and you’ve got your winner. Think of it as the Fiat Barchetta only with a roof – cheap and cheerful. For me that’s the most important thing I look for in a car. A car with soul is very hard to find outside Italy or Britain but now, here, this week, we’ve found one in Japan: The Toyota Celica.
