Special Edition Alfa Romeo Brera Released

Alfa Romeo has teamed with fashion specialists Italia Independent to create a special edition Brera.

On the outside, it gets a titanium paint shade, 18″ turbine style wheels, red-brake calipers and an aluminum fuel cap.

The inside gets some changes as well. There are carbon fibre bits everywhere, along with black leather and red stitching, as well as some Italia Independent logos.

As for the underpinnings, the car is available with either a 2.2L four-cylinder engine developing 185hp or a 3.2L V6 putting out 260hp. You can choose between FWD and AWD as well.

Only 900 units will be made, and they will be sold in Europe, Japan and Australia.  Pricing starts at about 41,000 USD for the 2.2 and 57,000 USD for the 3.2.

This looks interesting, but I’m not too sure about that paintjob, looks a bit odd on the pictures.

Car of the Year Nominees: Part 2

Continuing with Car of the Year nominees, here’s the second part. Family Car of the Year and Cheap Car of the Year are here.

Family Car of the Year

This is where we choose the ideal car for people with big families. Lots of space is an absolute must.

Fiat Doblo: Looks great, seats plenty of people, and it’s quite economical as well.

Toyota Sienna: The looks are a bit iffy in some places, but it promises sporty handling with a comfortable ride, great interior, and plenty of room.

Volvo XC60: A good looking car with a great, spacious interior. Very safe as well.

Vauxhall/Opel Insignia Sports Tourer: New Vauxhalls/Opels have said good bye to their old, conservative, ugly ancestors and buried them in the middle of nowhere. As a result they now make good cars and this good looking estate Insignia is one of them

Dacia Duster: A funky looking car with plenty of space, promising a low price tag.

Citroen C3 Picasso: Funky Citroen looks, with plenty of practicality and a reasonable price.

Cheap Car of the Year

These are cars for those of us who don’t want to, or simply can’t, spend too much money. Price range we set is $25,000 CAD and under.

Renault Twingo: A nice looking car with good handling and interior. Comes in a fantastic Renaultsport trim too.

Ford Fiesta: Ford has launched the new Fiesta hatch in 2008 in Europe but not in North America so we actually found an excuse to nominate it as it is a very, very good supermini.

Volkswagen Polo: This small, German hatchback has actually won the European Car of the Year Award, but that’s not important, as now it faces the most important test ever: Will it be our Cheap Car of the Year?

Ferrari Reveals One-off P540 Superfast Aperta

After giving us the gorgeous P4/5 one-off a few years ago, Ferrari’s special programme (The kind of thing that sucks up your wallet but builds a car just for you) has now spawned this thing. It’s called the P540 Superfast Aperta and it makes no sense to me. I just know the ‘Superfast’ bit sounds really good. This car has been built for an American client and it took Ferrari 14 months to get it finished. It’s based on the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano only that it has been strengthened as the roof has been chopped off. The so-called American client is Edward Walson who thought that a one-off Ferrari is a sensible gift for Christmas, for himself. The performance is still there mainly due to the Enzo engine present in the 599 as well.  It has 620 hp and 608 nm of torque but the most important thing is the new body style the car has received.

US Consortium Crown may be on Par with Geely's Bid for Volvo

American consortium Crown has been bidding on Volvo, and they may be on par with Geely’s bid of $1.8 billion.

Crown is led by former Ford director Michael Dingman, former Ford and Chrysler LLC executive Shamel Rushwin and ex-Volvo CEO Roger Holtback. They would make good leaders for Volvo, and they’re probably good bidders as well, hence the possibility of their bid matching Geely’s. Their bid is backed by both Swedish and Chinese investors and banks. It’s hard to say what will happen though, especially with Ford’s talks with Geely at an advanced stage already.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Recall

Jeep is recalling 2,990 Grand Cherokees, model year 2010, due to an issue with the passenger-side airbag. It may not deploy properly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

No incidents of injury or death due to this problem have been recorded, but testing shows it is possible.

To fix this, dealers will be fitting a new top cover for the instrument panel. If you own a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee, call your local dealership and arrange to get the fix installed. Try not to use your car until the fix is installed.
