Renault Considering Return to North America

Dacia Duster

Renault, maker of all sorts of nice cars like the Dacia Duster shown above, is considering returning to North America, after a 22 year absence.

Talking to Wall Street Journal, Renault’s Gerard Detourbet, head of the entry-level vehicles division, said that the Dacia Duster is a car which will influence this decision. He says that if the car does well in Eastern Europe and South America, Renault would consider giving it a chance in the US.

They won’t be entering with just one car though, like they did in late 1982 with the Alliance. They intend to have a whole family of affordable vehicles. Besides the Duster, the Renault Logan is another car which could be part of this line-up. Both cars will likely be changed for the US market though.

Renault is also considering an appearance in Southeast Asia.

I’d love to see Renault here, providing that they bring cars such as the Twingo RS and Clio RS.

Audi says: "We're not a green brand"

Audi’s Rupert Stadler has stated that they will not be trying to position themselves as a green brand like BMW. They will still make efficient cars though.

“We will stick to our Vorsprung Durch Technik philosophy, not have a catch-all marketing claim such as Efficient Dynamics,” said Stadler. “We’re convinced in Vorsprung Durch Technik, we’re a dynamic, sporty brand but not necessarily positioned as a green brand. That will come about as a matter of course.”

“We want to take out weight and want to further diesel and FSI technology. We can still improve fuel consumption. But we will not position Audi as a green car brand – we will fulfil regulations – but we are also an emotional brand.”

Some may bring up the e-tron and say this is marketing lies. But Stadler says otherwise. He says the possibilities of electric cars are interesting, and that they wouldn’t put an electric car on sale unless they were convinced it would give the sort of performance an Audi should.

“We have to optimise performance of electric cars,” he said. “Performance is part of our emotional appeal, so it’s very important.

“Electric power will also give Quattro more possibilities, such as powering the rear axle like in the A1 concept, or four wheels in motors like the E-tron. In fact, we want to launch a production E-tron in small volumes at the end of 2012.”

Speaking of the e-tron, reports are indicating that 1,000 units will be produced, when if it goes into production in 2012.

It’s nice to see that they’re interested in innovation rather than satisfying Greenpeace. Keep it up Audi.

Subaru to Make Rally Comeback

The Japanese manufacturer Subaru has entered next year’s IRC – International Rally Championship. However, they will not register any factory teams but instead will allow privateers running Subaru’s in the championship to score manufacturer points. Alongside Fiat, Honda, Mitsubishi, Peugeot, Proton, Skoda and Volkswagen from next year we will be finding Subaru there as well, making them the 8th team in the championship. After their WRC withdrawal, Subaru hasn’t had a factory team in any other rally championship but they now claim that the IRC is the way to go:  “The IRC provides an ideal arena to develop our customer competition activities. With approximately 1000 Subaru cars rallying around the world, this is a great opportunity for our customers.” said Subaru’s motor sport director.

There isn’t much else to say really, maybe this “entry” in the IRC is the first step in preparing a factory team for the championship, maybe they want to acquire precious data to set up their street cars better, with the chaotic motor sport climate lately, anything is possible. Anyway, we wish them good luck and a speedy return to the WRC as Subaru is was one good rally team.

US Consortium Crown may be on Par with Geely's Bid for Volvo

American consortium Crown has been bidding on Volvo, and they may be on par with Geely’s bid of $1.8 billion.

Crown is led by former Ford director Michael Dingman, former Ford and Chrysler LLC executive Shamel Rushwin and ex-Volvo CEO Roger Holtback. They would make good leaders for Volvo, and they’re probably good bidders as well, hence the possibility of their bid matching Geely’s. Their bid is backed by both Swedish and Chinese investors and banks. It’s hard to say what will happen though, especially with Ford’s talks with Geely at an advanced stage already.

Peugeot may be Purchasing Mitsubishi

Peugeot has done some work with Mitsubishi recently. They’ve helped them with the Outlander, and the i-MiEV. Now, Mitsubishi is going through financial difficulties, and Peugeot is considering taking a majority stake in them.

This deal is apparently in the final stages, with Peugeot looking to stake a stake of over 50 percent. This deal would seemingly suit both parties very well, and it will likely go through soon.

Peugeot previously wanted to cooperate with Mitsubishi simply on a project-by-project basis, but it looks like these trouble financial times have changed things.

The plan would be for Mitsubishi to issue Peugeot $2.2 billion to $3.4 billion in new shares, giving them a 30 – 50 percent stake in the company.

Saab 9-5

Netherlands-based manufacturer Spyker is now in the running to purchase Saab. They have released a statement confirming this, which you can see after the jump. Spyker is quite a mad company, and it would be interesting to see what Saabs would be created if they were to take over.
