Video Special: Slow Motion Group B Monsters

I’ve decided to make another slow motion video for the blog, this time with some fantastic archive footage of the Group B rally cars – the wildest and most powerful rally cars ever. As the footage is quite old, I highly recommend clicking the HQ button.

Note that the video is exclusively for The Blog of Cars!

Minicar on the Way from Opel

General Motors has declared that Opel/Vauxhall is in need of a minicar, something to compete with the Ford Ka and Peugeot 107.

Opel released a minicar concept called the Trixx five years ago, but it never made it to production. Many, many manfucaturers are in the minicar market, with more to come, so a move like this was expected eventually.

General Motors also mentioned that they were considering a battery powered electric car. There were reports a couple of months ago that they were considering teaming with Reva (Makers of the awful G-Wiz) to make an electric Chevy Spark, so that might be what they’re talking about.

Subaru to Make Rally Comeback

The Japanese manufacturer Subaru has entered next year’s IRC – International Rally Championship. However, they will not register any factory teams but instead will allow privateers running Subaru’s in the championship to score manufacturer points. Alongside Fiat, Honda, Mitsubishi, Peugeot, Proton, Skoda and Volkswagen from next year we will be finding Subaru there as well, making them the 8th team in the championship. After their WRC withdrawal, Subaru hasn’t had a factory team in any other rally championship but they now claim that the IRC is the way to go:  “The IRC provides an ideal arena to develop our customer competition activities. With approximately 1000 Subaru cars rallying around the world, this is a great opportunity for our customers.” said Subaru’s motor sport director.

There isn’t much else to say really, maybe this “entry” in the IRC is the first step in preparing a factory team for the championship, maybe they want to acquire precious data to set up their street cars better, with the chaotic motor sport climate lately, anything is possible. Anyway, we wish them good luck and a speedy return to the WRC as Subaru is was one good rally team.

Peugeot may be Purchasing Mitsubishi

Peugeot has done some work with Mitsubishi recently. They’ve helped them with the Outlander, and the i-MiEV. Now, Mitsubishi is going through financial difficulties, and Peugeot is considering taking a majority stake in them.

This deal is apparently in the final stages, with Peugeot looking to stake a stake of over 50 percent. This deal would seemingly suit both parties very well, and it will likely go through soon.

Peugeot previously wanted to cooperate with Mitsubishi simply on a project-by-project basis, but it looks like these trouble financial times have changed things.

The plan would be for Mitsubishi to issue Peugeot $2.2 billion to $3.4 billion in new shares, giving them a 30 – 50 percent stake in the company.

Peugeot Release Special Edition of the RCZ

Peugeot has released a special edition of the RCZ called the Black Yearling. It only comes in matte black, but that’s not a bad thing, it looks great in that colour.

It will come with 1.6L 156hp engine linked to a six-speed gearbox. The source worded itself a bit odd, but it will either have the option of, or come with satellite navigation, heated electric leather seats, and parking sensors. It will cost around 33,000 Euros (About 49,000 USD) and only 75 will be made.

It definitely looks good, but it could really use more power.

Renault Reviving the Gordini Badge

Peugeot may be killing off the GTI badge, but another French company, Renault, is reviving one of their badges, Gordini, and will be badging various hot hatches with it.

Rather than being completely new hot hatches, these will be Renaultsport cars, but with many personalization options, a bit like the Ferrari One-to-One program.

The first car to be released under this name will be the Twingo Gordini RS, based on the Renaultsport Twingo 133. This is presumably the car under the cover in the picture above. It will be revealed on November 25th, and will go on sale during the Spring of 2010. A Clio Gordini RS, based on the Renaultsport Clio 200 Cup, will follow a few months after.

Just a shame that these Gordini cars don’t come with some added performance.
